History

The history of les Fontaines’ Estate

A bold and unique architectural identity In the heart of a rich historical heritage and a renowned forest

A XIXᵗʰ century Rothschild castle inspired by a wide range of architectural styles, while respecting the regional influence:

  • Henri IV period for the main façade, in the spirit of the Place des Vosges in Paris,
  • Neo-Gothic for the cylindrical turrets,
  • An inspiration of the Dutch and English Northern Renaissance for the central pavilion

With a park made up of Perspective lines converging on the castle Henri  IV period for the main façade,

Construction of the castle was commissioned by Baron  James de Rothschild when he bought the estate in 1878. He  was a German banker and founder of the Paris branch of the  Rothschild family.

In the centre of the park, the Baroness commissioned the architect Dominique Girard to build “La Ferme Normande” –  evoking the seaside villas of the Normandy coast.
